BONFIM
The islands appeared in Oporto in the second half of the 19th century, with the industrial growth that brought thousands of people to the cities. Second doors were opened on the facades of the houses and narrow corridors through which the workers were guided, leading to the islands. The very name — island — denoted the isolation to which its inhabitants were victims: living here was a clear sign of poverty.
Through wanderings through the parish of Bonfim (Porto), small scribbles and notes in a pocket book and many photographs, this project grew into an open file that unfolds into several elements. There are also conversations with residents of the island of Bonfim transcribed into these notebooks; maps and diagrams of the routes taken and code numbers of searches related to the neighbourhood.
